The Kitchen Table Conversation
Some conversations feel small… until you realise they quietly change everything.
There we were, sitting at the table with the municipality, talking through what was next. My housemate’s care indication was coming to an end, and with it, the question: what actually works for us now?
On paper, she had support hours for guidance outside the home. But in reality, those hours were barely used—and when they were, they didn’t quite fit. Care had been reduced to appointments. Functional. Limited. Not life as it should be lived.
So we chose differently.
Together, we decided to let that structure go.
In its place came something more human. She signed up with a local volunteer organisation here in Dronten. Not just for practical help when I’m not there—but for connection. For fresh air. For moments that aren’t about care, but about living.
A walk. A coffee. A conversation.
Freedom, in a different form.
And you could feel it immediately—this shift from “support” to possibility.
Of course, there were other things to figure out too.
Her vision continues to change, and with that come new questions. The municipality guided us towards the right support, and step by step, we’re setting those next pieces in motion. It’s a process—but one we’re learning to navigate.
Even something as simple as travelling brought new challenges. Trains are part of our routine, but when we use a car, small things—like parking—suddenly aren’t so simple anymore. So we’re applying for a disabled parking card. Another adjustment. Another way to make life just a little easier.
Looking back, it wasn’t just a practical conversation.
It was a moment of rethinking. Of letting go of what didn’t fit anymore, and making space for something better.
And that made all the difference.
Because sometimes, the right support isn’t about more.
It’s about what truly works. 🤍
