Some days start with a plan… and unfold in their own way.

On May 28, 2016, we set out for the Support Fair in Utrecht—together with Codee and my mother. Everything had been arranged in advance, including travel assistance. But a day before departure, things changed. Train works meant a taxi instead.

It sounded simple. It wasn’t.

The taxi arrived late, the timing shifted, and we started the day with a small delay. But somewhere along that journey, something unexpected happened—we met Otto.

A kind man from Heerenveen, on his way to the same place. What started as a shared ride turned into shared company. By the time we arrived, it felt natural to stay together for a while.

And that’s how the day really began.

We moved through the fair together—starting with Otto’s question about his wheelchair. Within minutes, it was adjusted perfectly. You could see the difference straight away. Small changes, big impact.

Then it was our turn.

Codee had been struggling with her wheelchair fit. What felt like a big issue turned out to have a simple solution—small adjustments that would make a real difference in comfort. Those moments… they matter more than you expect.

After some exploring, laughter, and a shared lunch, we said goodbye to Otto. One of those brief encounters that somehow stays with you.

The rest of the day, we followed our own path.

We explored possibilities for a service dog—not as a guide, but as daily support. We gathered ideas for accessible travel, looking at places closer to home, where language and comfort come naturally. We found new products to try, small improvements that might make everyday life just a bit easier.

Not everything was there—we missed some stands, some smaller tools, some familiar organisations. But still, the day gave more than enough.

By late afternoon, tired but full of impressions, we made our way back. Another small delay, another adjustment. And once home—no energy left for cooking, just something simple, easy. Ending the day quietly.

Looking back, it wasn’t just about the fair.

It was about the moments in between.

The conversations. The small solutions. The unexpected connections.

A day that started with a delay… and ended with new possibilities. 🤍
